Campaign Facts and
Most Frequently Asked Questions
Overview
Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center has an opportunity to purchase the historic Baldwin Estate and make Kaluanui its permanent home. On January 23rd, a $5 million Save the Hui - Buy Kaluanui campaign was launched to purchase the property and establish a fund for its upkeep. The campaign will focus on multiple fronts simultaneously, including major individual gifts, grassroots, Hui board and staff, Hui membership, government, corporations and foundations.
Campaign Leadership
A Campaign Task Force of community leaders has been established. (See list at left.)
John Z. Lofgren, Executive Director, Cathie Byrne, Campaign Coordinator, and Chris Cowan, Campaign Advisor will staff the Campaign. Tannis Grimes, Development Director is assisting with government and foundation proposals.
Campaign Timeline
The Hui is under contract to demonstrate to Maui Land & Pineapple Company by February 28 that it is able to purchase the property. The closing date is May 1 unless ML&P exercises its 120-day option to extend closing.
Q: What is the purchase price?
A: $3.5 million
Q: Why is the campaign goal higher than the purchase price?
A: It will take funds to maintain and improve facilities. The Board is establishing a fund for the upkeep of Kaluanui as part of this campaign effort.
Q: Why is the Hui purchasing the additional 14.2 acres instead of focusing on just the 10.6 acres of the Kaluanui estate?
A: The Kaluanui estate portion of the property is not being offered separately from the adjacent 14.2 acres. For the Hui to own Kaluanui, it must purchase the whole offering.
Q: Will my gift leverage additional donations?
A: Yes. An anonymous donor has offered a $500,000 challenge to match dollar for dollar all community gifts and pledges made by February 28.
Q: How can I contribute?
A: Gifts may be made by check, major charge card, stock transfer or cash.
Q: Can my gift be pledged over time?
A: Yes. The Hui has a backer who will provide supplemental cash needed at the time of closing, so gifts may be pledged over a one-to-three year period.
Q: Do the buyers need to find a “suitable” property before the sale can be consummated?
A: We understand the buyer desires to own property here on Maui, and is actively looking for property at this time. Their contract with Maui Land & Pineapple Co. has not been cancelled as of this date. We remain optimistic that they will find suitable property for their use, and allow the Hui to complete the purchase of Kaluanui.
Q: If the Hui is unable to raise the funds to purchase the property, will my money be refunded?
A: All gifts to purchase the property will be held in a special account. If the sale does not go through donors will have the option of a refund.
Q: If I make a gift to purchase the property, will I also receive a membership?
A: No. All gifts received for property purchase must be restricted for that purpose and must be kept separate from annual operating funds, but we would welcome you as a member. For information about membership contact Tannis Grimes, (808) 572-6560 ext. 7.
Q: Where do I send my donation?
A: To: Cathie Byrne, Campaign Coordinator, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center,
ATTN: Kaluanui Fund
2841 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao, HI 96768
