Guest Artist: Oil Painting Teaching Artist
George Allan has been an award-winning oil painter on Maui for 40 years. He was born in Melbourne, Australia, attended the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, then traveled for 12 years throughout North & South America, Europe and Russia. While living for 8 years in St. Anton, Austria, he studied art every summer in various European museums. Arriving in Lahaina in 1973, one of his first art awards was in 1977, when he won the Juror’s Award in the Hui’s Ethel Baldwin Memorial Exhibit. His work was accepted in 5 Artists of Hawai’i exhibits at the Honolulu Academy of Arts from 1979 to 1990. He has been invited many times to participate in invitational shows of The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu; Laguna Blanca Art Invitational, Santa Barbara; the Maui Arts & Cultural Center; and Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center. George has also been a Juror for exhibits throughout Hawai’i. He has written two books, “Our Island Home,” published by Village Galleries in Lahaina in 2000; and “Life is a Performance”, published by Maui Arts & Cultural Center in 2002. He has taught palette knife oil painting classes at the Hui since 1993, at the Volcano Art Center, the Lana’i Art Program, and various advanced placement art classes in high schools on Maui. His work is included in the collections of the Hawai’i State Art Museum, the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, as well as corporate and private collections throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
