Youth Teaching Artist
Katie Peterson is a local artist, specializing in detailed graphite and watercolor renderings. Her love of the natural world and experiences farming and hiking in the Adirondack and Siskiyou Mountains inspire much of her work. She holds BAs in Creative Writing and Studio Art from SUNY Geneseo and a certificate in Herbalism from Herb Pharm in Williams, OR. As a singer/songwriter, Katie often incorporates music and poetry into her lessons, believing that music – like gardening – is a creative art form that not only mimics the expressive qualities of the visual arts, but also enhances and inspires the creative experience.
Bring the whole family to the Hui for a fun & creative Friday night! “Family Friday” workshops are designed to encourage children along with an adult guardian to create artwork together. This is a hands-on experience for everyone! We’ll order pizza and there will be laughter, smiles, and fun for all! PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Register for one—or as many as you like! Note: If your family doesn’t wish to eat pizza, you are welcome to bring something else for you and your keiki. Water is provided, but please bring any other preferred non-alcoholic beverages of your choice. In an effort to reduce waste, we encourage you to bring your own reusable silverware, plate and cup.
Cost: $25 per participant (1 adult and 1 child required at minimum)

Mixtures, Molds, & Magic: Handmade Paper & Sidewalk Chalk!

In this workshop you’ll learn how to create your own art supplies from surprisingly simple and safe materials! After a mini-science lesson, you and your child will make your own sidewalk chalk and handmade paper. You’ll go home with everything you make, along with recipes, ideas, and inspiration to keep on creating!
Buzzing into Springtime: Honeybees & Flowers!

Learn all about honeybees in this fun fusion of science and art! Students will create three-dimensional honeycombs, honeybees, and flowers out of recycled materials, and will learn important ways that they can help to save the honeybees. This class is sure to have you buzzing with ideas!
Flower Power: Painting & Planting!

Celebrate springtime with gifts that grow! In this class, each student will paint and decorate their own terracotta pot and plant a beautiful succulent or houseplant to take home. Students will also choose from a selection of local flower and veggie seeds and create whimsical plant markers for their garden! Throughout the class, students will learn about the stages of plant growth, fun DIY gardening tips, and how to properly care for their new plants.

Explore and discover the world of screen printing! Students will enjoy a hands-on experience as they learn the process of photo emulsion screen printing from start to finish. Participants will learn to design and draw original images, coat and expose a screen, set up a workspace, and print, print, print! You will walk away with custom prints and screen, and the confidence and skills to create, plan, and execute your own projects. Join us and learn how to make your own patterned fabrics, custom t-shirts, serigraph prints, posters, postcards, and more!

In this workshop, each student (child and guardian) will create a beautiful silk scarf using a 19th century photography process, three-dimensional objects, and sunlight. Students will follow in the footsteps of Anna Atkins, the first female photographer! Join in the fun, get creative as a family, and make a beautiful cyanotype scarf—a wonderful keepsake or great gift for a special someone.
