Filigree is the only metal technique that has been practiced over a period of three thousand years. This course will concentrate on the traditional tools and techniques employed by filigree craftsmen throughout the centuries. Each student will leave the course with an intricate, purer-than-sterling ring. Some of the areas covered are: alloying 960 silver, casting ingots, wire production techniques, wire-drawing techniques, wire-twisting techniques, binding, annealing, and cutting techniques, making of granules, decorative wire-shaping techniques, assembling and binding, powdered solder techniques, and coloring and finishing.

Berg will be at the Hui in conjunction with Hawaii Craftsmen's annual Aha Hana Lima series and will also be teaching a workshop on Oahu.

Participants will focus on heads, hands and feet, the most detailed and complex parts of a figure, with some discussion about incorporating them into a whole figure. Students who are experienced or particularly determined, may find that they are able to make progress on creating an entire figure. When we break for lunch, students may contribute to a potluck lunch if they choose.

Scott Skinner is founder of the Drachen Foundation, a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to the diffusion of kite knowledge worldwide. He will talk about his work with kites which has taken him around the world spreading appreciation of the art form.

Master kite builder Nobuhiko Yoshizumi from Kyoto will be joined by kite expert Scott Skinner and Master Printer David McDaniels for one evening and two days of instruction and demonstration in building, hand painting, and block printing of kites. Sunday will be the kite flying day on the grounds of the Hui.  Pray for wind!  This is a unique chance to explore this fascinating and fun traditional art form.  For adults and young students with a parent.

Washi Workshop

Hiromi Katayama, owner of Hiromi Paper International, is one of America's leading authorities on Japanese hand-made paper, called washi in Japan. She and her assistant will guide students through the traditional processes of washi making--from preparing and beating Japanese kozo (mulberry) pulp, to the forming and drying of sheets.  Not to be missed for any artist who works with paper.

The Joy of Watercolor I

This slide lecture will highlight important exhibitions featured at NYC museums during the 2005-2006 season including Vincent Van Gogh, "The Drawings," Robert Rauschenberg, "Combines," Elizabeth Murray and Edvard Munch, "The Modern Life of the Soul." Kriemelman will also give an overview of the controversial 2006 Whitney Biennial and the Downtown Show: The New York Art Scene, 1974-1984 at the Grey Art Gallery, NYU.

Sheila Kriemelman has been advising and mentoring artists in New York for over twenty years and artists on Maui for eight. Artists are asked to present actual work, slides, VHS-format videos or CDS-ROMS of their work when making an appointment for this one-on-one review. This is a unique opportunity to receive advice on portfolio formats, visual sequencing, professional advancement, how to present work, prepare for interviews and plan a career. Additional topics addressed will be artistÕs bio, resumŽ, statement, and pricing. Bring your bio, resumŽ and artist statement. All levels are welcome.

The Joy of Watercolor II

This workshop will be a continuation of the practice and principles of basic watercolor techniques with an introduction to abstraction.  Artists will abstract still-life and the landscape. Larger and more creative formats will be encouraged from that in Watercolor I.

The Joy of Watercolor III

This one-day intensive workshop will focus on working in pure abstraction. Participants will be introduced to non-traditional concepts, materials, techniques, formats and presentation. Right brain exercises and selected music will inspire artists to break the rules, experiment and take risks.  Working in watercolor/collage and watercolor/ mixed-media is encouraged. Understand-ing of basic principles and techniques of transparent watercolor is required.
