First Night, Hui Holidays & A Winter Wonderland

December 31, 2011We kicked off December with the 2nd annual First Night, the grand opening event commemorating Hui Holidays 2011. A celebrated Maui tradition, Hui Holidays is our signature holiday, boutique-style exhibition featuring a wide and whimsical range of artwork and gifts set at accessible prices. During First Night, designer/ choreographer André Morrisette unveiled his enchanting holiday window installations built with the help of numerous artist-volunteers. The week-long installation process had Maui artist and installation collaborator Nancy Skrimstad remarking, "this has been such an inspiring project for me. André and I have wanted to work together for years- and to be able to do it here with such a newly invigorated, fresh Hui has just been really gratifying as an artist. It's so great to see the Hui push their artists to express themselves and explore creativity." We also enjoyed sold-out attendance during our "Winter Wonderland" Camp Kaluanui program, where our keiki created jolly gingerbread houses, jingle bell jewelry, reconstructed greeting card ornaments and more. One parent remarked, “What an incredible experience Camp Kaluanui was for (my daughter). She came home exuberant every day and looked forward to the next day. It would be hard to focus on any one highlight, she enjoyed everything from clay to paint to dance and games at the end of the day. We were really impressed with the caliber and graciousness of the teachers, everyone was great to work with and made us feel confident that our daughter was going to have a fulfilling time at art camp.”
