Join us for a "talk story" with cultural practitioners Kumula‘au & Haunani Sing! Kumula‘au & Haunani will share about the past traditional and contemporary use of ʻieʻie along with visual examples of the art.  They will also talk about their journey and efforts taken to revive this cultural practice and its potential exciting future.

Lloyd Kumula‘au Sing Jr. & May Haunani Balino-Sing are Ke Kumu Hawai‘i, a husband and wife business team who share and teach Hawaiian basketry and culture-based education programs to the community. For the last 15 years, they have provided programs for community colleges, professional staff development workshops for educators and practitioners, and have hosted privately sponsored workshops. They are educators in the public and private school sectors, sharing with aloha about Hawai‘i’s host culture.

Talk Story with Sally French — Working with Irony and Kitsch

Join us for an exciting artist talk with Visiting Artist Sally French! Sally will share and discuss images of artworks, including her own, that use “kitsch” materials to present an ironic statement.

Sally French resides on the island of Kauai where she maintains a working studio and offers printmaking residencies to visiting artists through Double Dog Dare Studio. She has served as juror for Art Maui, Hui No‘eau, the Shaefer Portrait Challenge, Waimea Arts Council, Hawaii Association of Artists and currently serves on the SFCA Selection Committee for Art in Public Places. She is past president of Kauai Society of Artists and served on their board for over 15 years. In 2018, Sally was the featured artist for the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce Exhibit, the Guest Print Artist for the Honolulu Printmakers Exhibit and one of 25 artists selected by the Friends of HiSAM as a Top Pick from the collection of the State Foundation on Culture and Arts/Hawaii State Art Museum. She was a Biennial Artist and awarded 2 solo shows at The Contemporary Museum and has works in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. Sally has taught encaustic painting at Penland School of Crafts, Denver School of the Arts and has presented and exhibited works at universities, art centers, and galleries across the United States.

Join Hui No‘eau and East Maui Watershed Partnership as we come together to celebrate the opening of Mālama Wao Akua – an annual juried art exhibition honoring the native species of Maui Nui. In honor of the tragic fires on Maui, this event will benefit the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund with a $5 per vehicle suggested donation at entry.

Print Day in May

Join us for the Hui Print Studio’s second annual Print Day in May celebration! 4”x5” linocuts will be carved in advance or day of by students, studio ‘ohana, and friends. We will gather and celebrate printmaking by printing prayer flags as a group and continuing our flag installation in the studio. There will be music, refreshments, and positive vibes on the gorgeous Hui property.

We’ll print a studio set first and then customized sets of 5 flags can be purchased. All proceeds help fund the event and/or benefit the print studio. Our goal is at least 50 new prayer flags designs. If you wish to participate and carve a prayer flag, please contact Tia at tia@huinoeau.com.

In May 2021, Artist Marcos Lutyens will collaborate with Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center to create a Rose River Memorial on Maui at the Hui’s Makawao campus to honor the lives lost to COVID-19 in the State of Hawai‘i. Members of the Maui community have made more than 500 felt roses in remembrance of their loved ones. Maui’s healthcare workers, students, non-profit organizations, council members, government employees, and families have all contributed to the project. Click the header to read more!

Art Affair is Hui No‘eau’s signature annual fundraiser gala that supports visual arts education on Maui and provides vital funds that support our mission all year! Held at the Hui’s historic Kaluanui Estate, Art Affair is Maui’s premier art auction and social event and has been a valued tradition on Maui for over twenty years. The gala features a live and silent auction showcasing many of Hawai‘i’s most notable and collected artists, as well as live music, dancing, and a gourmet seated dinner by Chef Bev Gannon and Celebrations Catering. Benefitting community visual arts education, Art Affair is a once-a-year opportunity to gather and celebrate with a wonderful community of visual art supporters. This year’s event takes inspiration from celebrated Spanish artist Salvador Dalí. We encourage guests to dress the part and wear creative attire inspired by Dalí!

Meet the Creator of the 2018 Paper Dress Installation: Taylor Binda
Abstract painter and textile artist, Taylor Binda lives and works on the North Shore of Maui. Born in South Boston, Massachusetts, Binda migrated out west and earned a BA degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California. After graduating, she apprenticed with painter Danuta Rothschild in Santa Monica, and worked in the art department on film/TV sets. Her body of work includes abstract painting, installation artwork and textile design, from block printing to botanical dyeing. We are happy to have Taylor join the Hui family – her past tantalizing tentacle creation for Art Affair 2019 mean this year’s Hui Holiday’s paper dress will surely be a sight to see!
