January 2013 at Hui No‘eau

January 28, 2013 Happy 2013 Hui ‘ohana! January has delivered an inspiring kick-off to the New Year. A new exhibition, 65 winter art classes, new workshops through our Visiting Artist Program featuring Jeff Juhlin (Utah), Roy & Mara Superior (Connecticut) J.D. Hillberry (Colorado), Sandy Delehanty (California), Sarah Owen Tabor (Maine) and Kandi Everett (Oahu), plus some great, fresh energy making way for next month’s 21st annual Art Affair celebration (Camelot at Kaluanui: A Feast of Art & Merriment) and receiving day for “The New Black,” our highly anticipated black and white photography exhibition.

This year’s Hui No‘eau Annual Juried Exhibition was generously sponsored by Jack & Carolyn Schafer Gray, Robert & Fran Davidson and Doug & Jill Schatz. Of the 233 pieces submitted for consideration on our public receiving day, 66 were selected by guest juror Lauren Faulkner, Owner / Art Consultant at the Fine Art Associates on Oahu. Faulkner selected artist Christy Vail’s “Love Before and After” for the coveted Juror’s Choice Award and Claudia Johnson’s “Piko” to receive Honorable Mention. Hui No‘eau was honored to welcome the Acquisition Award Selection Committee of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) for a formal exhibition visit, who selected Shane Robinson’s “Edge : Green”, Heather Burton’s “The Banyon Tree Morning”, and Mary Ann Leigh’s “Balancing Act Bottle” for the State’s Art in Public Places Program.

"It is an honor to have my work included in this year's Annual Juried Exhibition,” states Hui teaching artist and newly announced selected artist for the 2013 Solo Artist Exhibition Chenta Laury, “Not only is Hui No'eau a gorgeous venue and setting in which to experience art, but the dialogue - spoken and visual - that is born from the Hui's broad range of programs inspires, moves and pushes artists like myself to new heights. This show is a valuable forum and opportunity for me to have my work reach a broader audience, and hopefully for me to contribute to deepening, expanding and enriching the dialogue around art on Maui and beyond. I am indeed most grateful for this opportunity."
