5th Annual Portfolio Day, FREE!

October 31, 2011The next generation of Maui's artists will get important tools to further their future careers at the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center's Portfolio Day, slated for 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9. High school students are invited to meet with admissions representatives from top art colleges and universities to get one-on-one critiques, discuss their work and interests, and find out about potential jobs in the arts.

And it's all for free.

The Hui's annual event, now in its fifth year, "serves as an unbelievable opportunity for potential college students to receive thorough, one-on-one critiques of their work as well as professional guidance for a future career in the arts," according to Kelly McHugh, the Hui's Youth Programs & Marketing manager.

This year, college and university representatives include Cari L. McIalwain, Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle; Robynne C. Royster, California College of the Arts in San Francisco; and Holly McVeigh, Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Ore.

High school students should bring examples of their best and most recent work, including works in progress and sketchbooks. They should be prepared to hear different opinions about their pieces and be able to explain the thought process behind their ideas, vision and execution.

Last year, 45 reviews were given to students from Kamehameha, Baldwin, Seabury, Maui High and Maui Prep schools.

Portfolio Day will be held at the nonprofit arts center's Solarium, 2841 Baldwin Ave. Click for further info.
