Print Day in May is an annual global celebration of printmaking, held on the first Saturday in May. Since 2007, it has grown from a small gathering in California into a worldwide event connecting tens of thousands of printmakers who spend the day creating and sharing prints in studios, homes, and communities around the world
Lisa Geertsen will present a slide presentation and lecture about her creative perspective on metal crafts. This lecture is free and open to the public. Her following 2-day workshop, called Small-Scale Non-Ferrous Foraging: Form and Function, begins on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

ABOUT LISA GEERTSEN
Lisa Geertsen is an artist blacksmith from Seattle, WA, and the owner of Firelight Forge, which she has operated since 2007, creating custom architectural and sculptural work. She is currently an Instructional Technician in Sculpture at the University of Washington.
She earned her BFA in Sculpture from West Virginia University (1997) and her MFA in Blacksmithing and Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University (2023).
Lisa has taught nationally at Penland, Haystack, and John C. Campbell Folk School, and has demonstrated for groups including Fire on the Mountain Blacksmithing Festival and the Florida Artist Blacksmith Association.
Her work has been exhibited across the U.S. and Europe, including her largest solo exhibition in Olympia, WA (2018), featuring 48 pieces from herHeartsseries. Through her teaching, exhibitions, and community-building, Geertsen is committed to broadening representation and diversity within the blacksmithing field.

Join us for a beautiful evening at Hui No‘eau as we unveil Mālama Wao Akua 2025—a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species and watersheds of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, and Kaho‘olawe). The exhibition is a creative collaboration between Hui No‘eau and the East Maui Watershed Partnership, inviting Maui artists to reflect on the power and significance of our natural environment through their art.
ABOUT MĀLAMA WAO AKUA
Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center in collaboration with East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP) brings you Mālama Wao Akua (Caring for the Realm of the Gods) – a juried art exhibition celebrating the native species of Maui Nui (Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe). We invite Maui artists to explore our watersheds and use their creative talents to raise awareness about the importance of protecting native species.
Selected artwork should be successful in sharing knowledge of the watersheds and native species with others in a meaningful way. Artwork will also be selected based upon a number of criteria, including originality of concept, creativity, technique, professionalism, and presentation. Our hope is that Maui artists of all ages will explore our watersheds and express the value that native species have within our daily life. This exhibition is sure to provide powerful visuals that celebrate Maui’s native plant and animal life. A jurying team with expertise in both art and conservation will select from among the pool of entries. Works in any medium are welcome!

Selected through a statewide open call, the two artists present new bodies of work in the Hui’s adjoining gallery spaces as part of this special exhibition series. Celebrate the opening with us on Friday, March 20 from 5–7pm, and experience the exhibition on view March 20 – May 15, 2026 at Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao.
ABOUT THE SHOW
Maui artist Jane Mount and O‘ahu-based Michelle Schwengel-Regala will present two concurrent solo exhibits in the Hui's adjoining gallery spaces as part of the 2026 Solo Artist Exhibition. Hui No‘eau’s Solo Artist Exhibition series provides two artists with the unique opportunity to be involved in all facets of exhibition planning and installation. It challenges artists to envision and produce an innovative and cohesive body of work to be shown in a professional gallery setting. Through an open call to artists across the state, Mount & Schwengel-Regala were selected as the two artists to present their solo shows in this upcoming exhibition.
Jane Mount presents Particles, a series of textile collages exploring how we are all part of the universe and connected within it, and yet we only experience what our current tools allow us to, and we understand very little. She is fascinated by all our attempts to explain the world–both the science we work out and the myths we create–in order to keep going in it.
O‘ahu-based scientist/artist Michelle Schwengel-Regala will present In/Finite Loop — a mixed-media exhibition drawing upon multiple aspects of her training and interests while looking to the future. During college in Wisconsin, she learned about ‘alalā (Hawaiian crow) as an extinct-in-the-wild species, and vowed to work toward their recovery efforts. This and other species are depicted as fiber sculptures and metalpoint illustrations, encouraging us to support conservation efforts to stabilize these populations and their habitats.
This exhibition is supported in part by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority Community Enrichment Program.
Join Hui No‘eau in celebrating the artwork and reflections of the first-ever Ka Ulana ‘Ie Maui Junior Cohort! Led by O‘ahu-based kānaka maoli cultural educators and practitioners, Kumulāʻau and Haunani Sing, this 4-month intensive cohort taught students the skill of ulana ‘ie – the art of weaving the ʻieʻie root – as they immersed themselves in the cultural significance of this art form through pule, oli, and ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i. A culminating educational exhibition of students’ completed artwork and a panel discussion will welcome the community to gain exposure to ulana ‘ie; and learn about the students’ reflections on native Hawaiian arts and culture practices.

Join us for a "talk story" with cultural practitioners Kumula‘au & Haunani Sing! Kumula‘au & Haunani will share about the past traditional and contemporary use of ʻieʻie along with visual examples of the art. They will also talk about their journey and efforts taken to revive this cultural practice and its potential exciting future.
Lloyd Kumula‘au Sing Jr. & May Haunani Balino-Sing are Ke Kumu Hawai‘i, a husband and wife business team who share and teach Hawaiian basketry and culture-based education programs to the community. For the last 15 years, they have provided programs for community colleges, professional staff development workshops for educators and practitioners, and have hosted privately sponsored workshops. They are educators in the public and private school sectors, sharing with aloha about Hawai‘i’s host culture.
Join us for an exciting artist talk with Visiting Artist Sally French! Sally will share and discuss images of artworks, including her own, that use “kitsch” materials to present an ironic statement.
Sally French resides on the island of Kauai where she maintains a working studio and offers printmaking residencies to visiting artists through Double Dog Dare Studio. She has served as juror for Art Maui, Hui Noeau, the Shaefer Portrait Challenge, Waimea Arts Council, Hawaii Association of Artists and currently serves on the SFCA Selection Committee for Art in Public Places. She is past president of Kauai Society of Artists and served on their board for over 15 years. In 2018, Sally was the featured artist for the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce Exhibit, the Guest Print Artist for the Honolulu Printmakers Exhibit and one of 25 artists selected by the Friends of HiSAM as a Top Pick from the collection of the State Foundation on Culture and Arts/Hawaii State Art Museum. She was a Biennial Artist and awarded 2 solo shows at The Contemporary Museum and has works in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. Sally has taught encaustic painting at Penland School of Crafts, Denver School of the Arts and has presented and exhibited works at universities, art centers, and galleries across the United States.

Join us for the Hui Print Studio’s second annual Print Day in May celebration! 4”x5” linocuts will be carved in advance or day of by students, studio ‘ohana, and friends. We will gather and celebrate printmaking by printing prayer flags as a group and continuing our flag installation in the studio. There will be music, refreshments, and positive vibes on the gorgeous Hui property.
We’ll print a studio set first and then customized sets of 5 flags can be purchased. All proceeds help fund the event and/or benefit the print studio. Our goal is at least 50 new prayer flags designs. If you wish to participate and carve a prayer flag, please contact Tia at tia@huinoeau.com.

Join us in welcoming 2023 Artist in Residence Gar Waterman! During his 6-week residency, sculptor Gar Waterman will unite visual art and science to engage the community in the discovery, celebration, and conservation of Hawai‘i’s marine ecosystems. Gar will be creating a sculpture of a nudibranch from local wood. Come meet Gar and learn more about the marine creatures inspiring his work!
